The average person is supposed to spend a little under 5 minutes total brushing their teeth each day. This time is assumed to be divided into a twice daily ritual. But should we really be that strict about brushing twice a day?

It seems like such a small thing to do, but it’s actually vital to not only oral health, but our immune systems, and making our teeth last longer through out our lifetime. Guerra Dental has come up with some information on why we should be doing it.

Depending on family genetics most people have a natural amount of bacteria in their mouths, then add in all of the food we eat, the people we kiss, and the germs in the air that we breath in. The average person can have more than 6 billion bacteria in their mouth at one time! That’s pretty disgusting! If that isn’t killed, or at the very least stirred up, twice daily our mouths don’t stand a chance of fighting off tooth decay. In fact brushing our teeth keeps our bodies healthy too. We limit our chances of getting sick with infections of many kinds by brushing our teeth twice each day. By brushing in the evening we are getting rid of much of the day’s bacteria we gained, and by brushing at night we are getting rid of what the bacteria multiplied into all night long.

So yes, brushing twice daily is essential and we should make sure we are doing it. It wouldn’t hurt to throw in a few extra brushings here and there too!
